Now that the NaPoWriMo is over, I have some thinking to do.
On the one hand, keeping up on a poetry blog is time consuming, never mind the mental energy it takes to compose something that isn’t a Hallmark rhyming contraption (my default) – though I like writing those quite a bit.
On the other hand, it has been a really long time since I’ve worked on poetry. It’s been fiction, creative non and otherwise. Poetry is hard because it forces me to actually pay attention to my thoughts and feelings. Creative nonfiction allows for rationalization and description as a buffer, and regular fiction can carry whatever emotion I want it to. But poetry seems to require a little more honesty than I remember. Or perhaps I was more honest to myself when I was in college.
I’ve enjoyed having to write a poem a day – it’s a refreshing change of pace from historical fiction, and editing essays.
My gut reaction: Keep up with the poetry, and intersperse with short stories and essays on topics I enjoy. It will be entirely new, unprecedented, and unheard of in the whole of the internet, right?
I guess this means you’ll be hearing from me soon, as opposed next April.
A spur of the moment limerick:
What do you think you will do?
Now that NaPoWriMo is through?
Stick around and enjoy
All the words I’ll employ?
Or go play some Mass Effect 2?
